Before you buy cover, find the gap.

Most people are quoted a policy before anyone has worked out what they actually need. I do it the other way round: put your numbers on the table first, then decide whether anything needs buying at all.

Six free calculators

Start with a number, not a brochure

Each one takes two minutes and gives you a figure you can argue with. Nothing is sent anywhere until you choose to send it.

These are educational calculators, not advice. They apply published formulas to figures you type in; they do not know your policy wording, your health or your trust deed.

What I cover

Six kinds of cover, and the question each one answers

Not everyone needs all six. Most people need two, and the order matters more than the products.

Life coverFor families and business owners

If you died tonight, would the mortgage still be paid, and could your family stay in the house? Life cover is the plainest product in the market and the one most often bought at the wrong size — usually because nobody calculated the number first.

Trauma coverFor anyone with a mortgage

Cancer, heart attack, stroke. ACC does not cover illness, and treatment often means months away from work at the same time as unplanned costs. Trauma cover pays a lump sum on diagnosis, so the decisions you make are medical rather than financial.

Income protectionFor anyone whose income funds a household

Your ability to earn is the asset everything else sits on. This pays a monthly benefit if illness or injury stops you working — and unlike ACC, it does not stop at the workplace door.

Health & medicalFor families and teams

The difference between waiting and choosing. Health cover is about how quickly you get seen, and by whom — which is a different question from whether treatment is funded at all.

Key person & shareholderFor companies with 2+ owners

What happens to the shares, the bank facility and the clients if a partner dies or cannot work. Usually three separate documents: the agreement, the valuation, and the funding. Most businesses have none of them.

Employee benefitsFor teams of five and up

A scheme your team actually notices — health, life, trauma, income protection — costed per head, with the tax treatment confirmed by your accountant rather than assumed.

For employers

You are already paying for this — just not to an insurer

Every business funds illness and turnover through lost days, rehiring and clients who drift. A team scheme moves that cost into a predictable line, and gives people a reason to stay.

5–9staff

Health-led

  • Health cover for specialist and imaging
  • Surgical cover
  • Add-on options as the team grows
10–14staff

Core group scheme

  • Surgical and specialist, scaled by band
  • Life and trauma at 2× salary
  • Income protection to age 65
15+staff

Comprehensive

  • Full specialist and surgical cover
  • Life, trauma and income protection on one schedule
  • Claims experience rated at renewal
Cost it for your team → Ask for a scoped proposal

Availability depends on insurer criteria and your team's ages and locations. How premiums are treated for tax depends on who owns the policy and who benefits — please check your own position with a tax specialist.

How it works

Three meetings, and you can stop after any of them

The numbers

You bring the figures — income, debt, savings, existing cover. We put them into the calculators together and look at what is genuinely unfunded. No products are discussed in this meeting.

The options

If there is a gap, I show you two or three ways to close it, with the cost of each and what it does not cover. You take it away and think. Nothing is signed in the room.

The paperwork

Only if you decide to proceed: application, underwriting, and a written record of what was recommended and why. Then an annual review, because your numbers will change.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers

Isn't ACC enough?

ACC covers accidents at work or on the road, at up to 80% of your income. It does not cover illness — cancer, heart attack, stroke, or a condition that keeps you off work for months. For most households the illness gap is the larger one, and it is the one income protection and trauma cover exist for.

I have KiwiSaver. Doesn't that cover me?

KiwiSaver is a retirement savings scheme, not protection. You can apply for a hardship withdrawal in serious circumstances, but it is discretionary, it may take weeks, and it permanently reduces your retirement balance. It is a last resort, not a plan.

How are you paid?

Usually by commission from the insurer when a policy is placed, and sometimes by an agreed fee instead. Which one applies to you will be disclosed in writing before anything is put in place — along with any conflict that creates. If a recommendation is fee-based, you will know the amount in advance.

Do I have to buy anything to use the calculators?

No. The six calculators are free and always will be, and you can print the result and take it to another adviser. If you want the numbers checked by a person, that is what the review is for — and the fee for it is credited against any advice fee if you go ahead.

What if I have a health condition?

It depends on the condition and the insurer's underwriting, and it is rarely a simple no. Some conditions are accepted as standard, some carry an exclusion or a loading, and some are declined for a particular benefit but accepted for another. The honest answer is that we apply and find out, rather than guessing in advance.

Can we meet in Chinese?

Yes — 中文 or English, whichever you think in. Documents can be explained in either language, though the policy itself will be issued in English by the insurer.
